Final Exam part 2

by BrandonHelfer on Nov.22, 2009, under

The internet was originally a U.S.military project called ARPANET in 1969. The internet and the World Wide Web(WWW) are 2 different things. The internet is the interlock of computer which gives the ability for information to be transmitted. Search engines send out things called "spiders" to go through every web page and find the top/most wanted searches and brings the information to the search engines. Many searches have different amounts of web pages though, google has the most with 8.1 billion web pages, and Ask Jeeves is one of the lowest with 2.5 billion. There aren't many similar web pages between these different search engines. Some websites are not available from search engines like JSTOR or LexisNexis. Many techniques that can be used such as Phrase searching, Truncation, Boolean operators, and Search limits. Phrase searching allows you to find two or more words together using quotation marks (" "). Truncation searches by using characters as blank spaces(*,$).  Boolean operators allows you to mix search terms using things such as AND, OR, NOT. Search limits help to narrow down searches to specific topics by using things such as google's advanced search. Phrase searching is useful when looking for specific words/phrase to help narrow down a search. it's better to search for sources instead of just information. It's better to try and narrow a topic down by using these different search options, because it helps from making the sources become to broad or generalized.

1. PageRank Technology: PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance.

2. grass snake, showed searches about snakes.

Racism towards African Americans during current day america

I am an African American during current day America, and i feel that even though conditions have improved for my kind after slavery was abolished we are still being segregated against and mistreated. Everyday i see police chasing after my people for crimes that they didn't commit, we are just seen as the prime suspects. We have all been individually been trying to build our own wealths and many of us have gained enough to be considered middle class and even upper class. Will Smith is a good example of an upper class African American. Even though we are in equal classes with equal wealth, we still aren't treated with equal respect. I see these caucasians making jokes about African American's every day saying how we're like monkeys and we're always running from the police and it's not fair. I see hate crimes every day of both whites on blacks and blacks on whites and i feel that it's not fair. I feel that everyone was created equal, but i see that people are being unfairly treated just because of their racial background. Whenever I see an African American run out of a store i tell myself "please don't give them a reason to hate us more." We're even in the White house now, our president is Barrack Obama, but we still get miss treated with no respect. We do our best to show that we are equal, but there are some of us that just don't want to act like we're equal and they stick to these racial stereotypes and continue to steal from and hurt other people. I feel and hope that in the future, whether it's 5 years or 50 years, that we will all be able to live in piece, equality and harmony.

Importance of Education

by BrandonHelfer on Nov.22, 2009, under

My video is about the importance of education and how it helps and affects everyone. Without our education, the majority of jobs would be too difficult to understand and we wouldn't be able to have the great things we have today such as doctors. Education is what changes us for the better and brings us to better understand the world and everything else that happens around us.

Digital Story 2 narrative

by BrandonHelfer on Nov.22, 2009, under

Education is the process of educating or teaching. In education systems such as the Department of education, we, the students, are taught many different ways to enhance our knowledge and skills to help us in our futures to keep our nations future bright. Without our education system we wouldn't have the efficiency needed to carry out modern day jobs, we need our education to understand how to do certain things in the future that will help us prosper. Certain jobs would be much harder to improve in without the knowledge needed to understand the many intricate details to go with that specific career. To be a doctor, you need a high efficiency of Science and understanding of the human body to have knowledge of the many different problems that can cause harm to a person's body. Being an architect, requires a lot of mathematics to determine the structure of buildings. I want to be a graphic designer, after  graduate from college, and that has to do with a lot of science, and knowledge of electronics. Our education system is the basic structure of our civilization, and without it, we'd be nothing and we'd be unable to advance in our technologies, and other parts that go without our living environment.

Digital story grading reflection

by BrandonHelfer on Nov.22, 2009, under

I watched and gave my own personal grades to three stories, Joey 1 minute, We are American and A wrinkled heart. I felt that a wrinkled heart and we are american were both very good, but i also feel that globally connected We are American would have a greater influence. It helps to realize problems globally, and can help people feel for their own problems for different issues. It shows how race does not matter, because we are all equal, and should be treated as such. That is why i feel this digital story affects more with international issues. Digital Story 2 - Introduction

by BrandonHelfer on Nov.22, 2009, under

My second Digital story is going to be about Autism. This is a topic that greatly affects me, because my little brother Joshua was diagnosed with Autism when he was three. I have participated in events such as a walk for autism with my family, because this is something we are all deeply concerned about. We all struggle to live with his disability, but we also have learned to accept it, no matter how hard it is

Graduate Portfolio Reflection - Story 1

by BrandonHelfer on Nov.22, 2009, under

The Graduate Portfolio is an assignment that was given by the College of Staten Island High school for International Studies. The Graduate Portfolio is an assignment given so that students would be able to reflect on their past year at this school and see how they have grown and learned. This project help the Graduate Portfolio, because it helped us looked back and realize different facts and events. This also helps us, because it helps us think of different strategies to use to help us reflect on our past year at our school, The College of Staten Island for International Studies.

Layout is creative and visually appealing.  The fonts, colors, and background almost provide a clear theme. It is generally an easy presentation to read and follow.

Layout is visually appealing although some slides may be too cluttered or too empty.  The fonts, colors, and background do not necessarily provide a theme and there may be parts that are difficult to view/read.

Layout lacks visual appeal and is sometimes too cluttered or too empty.  It may be confusing at times.  The fonts, color, and background do not work well together  in the presentation making it difficult to view/read. There may be too many types of fonts, etc.
